In October 2022, BT switched off its POP3 connector for email. Let’s explore what this means for your business.
POP3 is an email protocol that governs how emails are sent and received. However, it is outdated, less secure and not working so well with platforms such as Microsoft 365.
BT has switched off its POP3 connecter, which allowed users of Outlook to set up and use Outlook with BT-hosted email addresses. From now on, users will be restricted only to use BT’s Webmail.
If you want to continue using Outlook, or other email clients, you will only be able to use them if you migrate away from BT, transferring data to another provider, for example 365.

POP3 is quick and simple to use because it only downloads emails simultaneously from your inbox.
It doesn’t synchronise between different devices or let you organise emails in the server mailbox, and if you lose access to your main device, you also lose access to all past emails.
Alternatively, SMTP is easy to use and the server will keep trying to resend an email until it’s successful, keeping you informed.
However, security isn’t so tight and SMTP servers can reject email messages over a certain length.
IMAP doesn’t try to download the entire email until you open it and allows access to your emails from multiple locations and devices at the same time.
However, accessing email is slower because folders need to be synchronised every time a message is sent or received.
You also need an active internet connection for it to work and a larger mailbox storage space.
