The consumer watchdog Which? has warned that millions of homes and businesses across the UK could face a security risk from old routers that put them at risk of being hacked.
After examining 13 models provided by customers by internet-service providers like Sky, Virgin Media, Talk Talk and EE, they found that more than two-thirds had defects.
Weak default passwords where cyber criminals could easily hack Wi-Fi routers was at the top of the list of issues.
The government has a plan to ban default passwords being displayed on devices. This will form part of an upcoming legislation covering the security of smart devices.
Kate Bevan, computing editor for Which?, says the legislation couldn’t come any sooner.
She said: “Internet service providers should be much clearer about how many customers are using outdated routers and encourage people to update devices that pose security risks.”
