The iPhone 12 is on its way and comes with 5G!

iPhone 12 Apple

Apple have revealed they are making the jump to 5G with the new iPhone 12, which will be released in the UK at the start of November.

The tech giant have actually increased handset sales in the last year, going against the trend, and will look to bolster these sales with the additions of the iPhone 12 Pro, Pro Max and Mini.

New features and capabilities

The latest iPhone comes with the fastest processor we have seen from an iPhone yet. The A14 bionic chip is said to improve battery life as well as refining the camera and video capabilities.

Switching from LCD to OLED screen lighting offers better colour accuracy, contrast and an increase in pixel density.

A Magnet in the back of the phone allows snap on card wallets (which will protect your cards from the magnet) and a Magsafe wireless charger which will charge your phone on the go.

The 11% thinner device has had a cosmetic overhaul with sharper, flatter edges and bigger screens that go all the way to the sides, pairing well with the new OLED lighting.

Night Mode is a new feature designed to sense low lighting and create better contrast and focus in these environments, changing the game for evening photography.

Finally, all of these new features should survive given the four times better drop performance due to Apple’s new ceramic shield!

What the switch to 5G means

New 5G capabilities have recorded highest speeds of 3.5 gigabits per second, offering massive upload and download speeds!

“5G will bring a new level of performance for downloads and uploads, higher quality video streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity and so much more”

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive

5G can be switched on and off to preserve battery life, however may not be available to everyone due to its till fairly sparse coverage across the UK.

The switch to 5G seems a rare investment by Apple in a product that isn’t quite there yet. Being known for waiting until a product hits maturity before utilising it, 5G seems an unexpected move for the future, instead of the now.

What are the biggest talking points from the latest release?

EarPods or power adaptors will not be included with the latest smartphones by Apple, however you will still get the USB wire. This has been marketed as a plan to lower Apple’s carbon footprint, but is it really a way to boost profits?

The iPhone 12 Mini has a smaller profit margin. In the current circumstances, are people going to go for this cheaper model or have Apple shot themselves in the foot?

Mobile gaming should drastically improve with 5G and the A14 chip, therefore a question mark may be raised about the possibility of laptop/PC sales taking a hit as more people turn to mobile gaming.

Finally, will network providers have to up their offers and deals to compete with the new, faster 5G on offer?

These questions will be answered in time, but for now the new iPhone 12 looks an exciting prospect and we await to see how it performs on release next month!
